Obituary for Barron Ernest Mayo Jr.

With endless love, but heavy hearts, the family of Barron Ernest Mayo Jr. announce his passing on Wednesday, November 16, 2022. He was 81 years old. He has gone to live with his Maker and the loving family that preceded him.

Lovingly called by the nickname of “Butch” by his family and close friends, he lived an extraordinary life. He was born, raised, and lived almost all of his life in Pensacola. He graduated from Pensacola High School in 1959, and later earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from The University of West Florida.

He answered the call of his country by serving 4 years of military service in the United States Air Force. After being honorably discharged from military service, he became a classroom teacher, first at Ferry Pass Middle School and later, and for the rest of his teaching career, at Brownsville Middle School. During his years of teaching, he earned the admiration, respect, and love of his students and colleagues. During the latter portion of his tenure at Brownsville, his entrepreneurial spirit emerged, and emerged with gusto.

He had become aware that classroom teachers did not have a high quality and reliable source of buying school supplies for themselves and their students. Barron took early retirement from Escambia County Schools and opened A to Z School Supply. The store was a thriving and active educational resource for teachers and parents for over 24 years.

After A to Z closed, Barron devoted his time, energy, and considerable talents to helping members of his immediate family. He was fiercely devoted to his father, mother, his 5 siblings, and other family members. Every day, Barron would be somewhere helping some member of his family.

Barron was preceded in death by his parents, Barron Ernest Mayo Sr. and Doris Beck Mayo; his brother, Douglas Eugene Mayo; his sister, Betty Mayo McJoyner; all of his aunts and uncles, and several first cousins to Butch and our family.

Barron is survived by his three sisters, Doris Mayo Jenkins (Ken), Sara Jayne Hyduk (Norman), and Barbara L’Abbe (Joe); sister-in-law Patty Mayo, as well as Bonnie McQuagge, who was like a sister to Butch and our family. He is also survived by his nephews Douglas Mayo (Annette), David Mayo, Jeremy L’Abbe, Nicholas Hyduk, and nieces Sheila Parker (Daniel) and Sara Seeley (David); as well as great nieces and nephews Courtney Parker, Nicole Peterson (Eric), and Jonathan Mayo.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Trahan Family Funeral Home. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 22 at 10:30 AM and the service will take place at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park in Pensacola.
Barron was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be missed.
