Obituary for Carolyn Virginia McKay (Odom)

Carolyn Virginia (Ginger) McKay, 78, of Pensacola, passed away on March 8th, 2024 at Covenant Care Hospice. Ginger was born in Pontotoc, MS on July 16, 1945. She was born to Billy Murphy Odom and Helen Whitwhorth Odom. She grew up in Pontotoc, MS and graduated from Pontotoc High School in 1963. After high school she moved to Columbus, MS to attend Mississippi State College for Women where she graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She then moved to Pensacola and began teaching at Bellview Jr. High School. While there she met James R. Peavy and they were married at First Baptist Church in Columbus, MS on December 28, 1968. They divorced in 1989. In 1989 she married Billy M. McKay. They were married until his death in 2013.

Ginger was an 8th grade English teacher at Bellview Middle School and Bailey Middle School for 32 years. She was a member of EREA, Krewe of Aphrodite, Fiesta Frolickers, and Red Hat Society. She was a charter member and the pianist of Pine Summitt Baptist Church. She also attended services at Olive Baptist Church.

Ginger was preceded in death by her mother; father; and her uncles, Hendon and John H. Whitworth.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Chittpangna (Ponce); 4 grandchildren, Aiden, Hunter, Parker and Zoe Chittipangna; and cousins, Anna Schoonover and Jerry Whitworth.

She was cremated and a celebration of life will be held in May at a time TBD.
