Obituary for Gregory Young Poythress

Gregory Young Poythress, age 60, of Marianna, FL passed away July 22, 2022 in Select Specialty Hospital – Pensacola, FL. Greg was a Native of Pensacola, FL born on May 24, 1962.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jean Augusta Macks.

Greg is survived by his father, Charles Poythress, his stepmother Margaret Ellis, his sister Kimberly Burns, his sister Louisa Poythress, and his niece Kendall Burns.

He was a member of Rivertown Community Church. Greg moved to Marianna in 1985 from Chipley, FL while attending a two-year program at George C. Wallace in 1986 to obtain his board certification as a Registered Nurse. He began his career as a Traveling Nurse then settled in Houston, TX until 1995. He then worked at Jackson Hospital as a RN House Supervisor through 2010. While at Jackson Hospital Greg continued his education and dual enrolled at FL State University and Chipola College while working full time he completed both his Associate and Bachelor degrees in Nursing in the year 2000. He graduated from the University of South Alabama and received his Masters degree in Nursing in 2002. He was Board certified by passing the ACC National Nurse Practitioner Certification in 2002.

Greg was a primary care giver as a Nurse Practitioner at multiple correctional facilities from 2008 till 2018 at Graceville in Graceville, FL, Jackson in Malone, FL, Blackwater River in Milton, FL, Bay in Panama City, FL.

Greg’s last place as a Nurse Practitioner prior to his passing was Sunland Center. He loved his co-workers and clients.

He enjoyed delivering meals for the King’s Table Food Pantry to people that were home bound. He enjoyed golfing with his friends and taking his niece hunting. He was an FSU football fan and loved taking family trips, plus visiting with his many friends and family members.

Trahan Family Funeral Home handled arrangements for cremation.

A gathering of family and friends will be arranged by the family later this year.
