Obituary for James Nelson Rockwell Sr.

James Nelson Rockwell
1927 - 2021

James Nelson Rockwell, a World War II veteran and retiree of Champion Paper Company, died on February 18, 2021 at the age of 93 after several years of declining health. Jim was born on February 27, 1927 to the late Harris Nelson and Martha Louise Rockwell in Fairhope, Alabama.

Jim is survived by his children, Patricia Southworth (Ed), Jim Rockwell, Jr. (Vicki), David Rockwell (Aliece), and Jonathan Rockwell (Robin). He is also survived by his step children Lisa Glenn (Mike) and Jimmy Stiller (Amy). In addition, he leaves nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife of 45 years, Marian Barnett Rockwell; his second wife of 22 years, Barbara Stiller Rockwell; his son, Richard B. Rockwell; and his brother, Dr. Donald H. Rockwell.

Jim grew up in Fairhope, Alabama and attended Organic Primary and High School. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the South Pacific. After returning home from the war, he attended the University of Alabama where he earned his Masters Degree in Chemistry. After graduation he married and moved to Pensacola working for Newport Industries. He later moved his family to the Ensley area and went to work for St. Regis Paper Company (later to become Champion Paper) where he retired.

Jim was a member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church for over 63 years. He loved his church and served faithfully. He was instrumental in forming Boy Scout Troup 632 at the church serving as the Scout Master and later on the advisory board. He will be greatly missed.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, February 22, 2021, at Pine Forest United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm.
The family would like to suggest that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to Pine Forest United Methodist Church.
