Obituary for Jane Miller Murphy

Jane Murphy, age 83, of Milton, Florida went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, January 13, 2023.

Jane was born on January 24, 1939, to Marshall and Carrie Mae Miller. A long-time Milton, FL resident, she grew up on Canal Street with her brother Dan. Growing up, Jane loved to play games and was a neighborhood champion at marbles. She graduated from Milton High School in 1957 and interned with the Press Gazette. Shortly after, she began working at Bell South in Pensacola as a telephone operator where she met her future husband, John Murphy. They married in 1960 in Milton, Florida but spent the early years of their marriage in the Pensacola area. Together, they had two wonderful children: John and Reneé.

Jane stayed at home with the children but continued to do the things she loved. Having a creative spirit, Jane continued to craft, sew, and bake. Jane could often be found sewing a new outfit or blanket for her loved ones. Jane learned to sew at a young age. She continued this passion by making her wedding dress, being commissioned to make outfits for friends, and creating beloved blankets for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. When she wasn’t sewing, she enjoyed crafting for local craft fairs or church decorations. She appreciated contributing to events and loved baking a sweet treat to bring along.

Once they began settling down, John and Jane became members of Pine Terrace Baptist Church in Milton, Florida in 1999. They were involved in the choir, children’s ministry and a local homeless ministry, Family Promise. They had a great passion for carrying the Gospel of Jesus Christ and went on many mission trips including hurricane responses, serving as house parents for a college outreach program, rebuilding churches, and volunteering at Ridgecrest Conference Center in the Smokey Mountains. Jane continued to be actively involved in the church until her passing.

Jane was preceded in death by the loss of her husband, John, in 2009 and her daughter, Reneé, in 2015. Those left to cherish her memory are her brother, Dan, son, John (Sarah), son-in-law, Jesse (Reneé), grandchildren Brianne (Pierre), Emily, John (Torri), Ian (Jordon), and Torrin. Jane was blessed with seven great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at Pine Terrace Baptist Church in Milton, on Thursday, January 19, 2023, with visitation at 1:00 and service at 2:00 p.m.
