Obituary for Joe Smith
Joe Smith was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 06, 2021. He was born in Pensacola, Florida on February 13, 1945. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleveland Smith and Hester L. Hardy Smith.
Joe attended schools in Escambia County school system. He worked at The Boy’s & Girl’s Club of Escambia County for ten years before retiring. After retiring he continue to serve his community by volunteering at Wedgewood Community Center faithfully for 8 plus years.
Joe as a young man was active in baseball. It was a family sports for Cleveland Smith’ boys. Joe played along with his brothers, Cleveland Smith Jr. and Stevie G. Tate for many years. Cleveland Smith’ boys were the best on ‘Pensacola Seagull’ baseball team which was played every Saturday and Sunday at Pop’s Ball Park. It was one of the family’ main events to witness with a lot of fun and enjoyment.
Joe had a contagious spirit that brought attention and awareness of his presence. Now, his character was astounding with no dull moments to lose. Many that knew him loved and enjoyed his personality! He loved life and enjoyed being free spirit, laughing, joking, challenging, and entertaining the moments of God’s giving.
Joe Smith was preceded in rest by his parents: Cleveland Smith Sr. and Hester L Hardy Smith; (6) Sisters: Arlene Smith, Emma Dumas, Overseer Bernice Wilson-Minns, Pastor Margaret Hannah, Mattie L. Tate, and Hattie R. Tate, (7) Brothers: James Smith, Jimmy Smith, Retired Sgt. Cleveland Smith Jr., Paul Tate, Charlie Fields-Tate, Stevie G. Tate, and James Stromas.
He leaves to cherish and embrace his loving memories four sisters: Ella M. McReynolds, Aretha Nairn, Pastor Mattie White (Larry) Jennings and Adeline Solsberry, all of Pensacola, Florida, a loving and devoted brother-in-law, Robert Hannah, nephews, Rodney Smith, Tyrone Smith, and niece, Angie Smith, (3) aunts; Annie Jenkins (Wine) Green, Sarah Jessie and Catherine Grigspy and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who truly admired his character and wits.
Joe’s service will be held at Trahan Family Funeral Home in Pensacola, (60 Industrial Blvd.) Visitation will begin at 2:30 pm, with his service following at 3:00 pm.
