Obituary for John Bryant Lay

John Bryant Lay
1936 – 2023

John “Bryant” Lay passed away peacefully at Santa Rosa Medical Center on March 28, 2023, with his family by his side. Bryant was born in Pace, FL on August 21, 1936 to John Gordon “JG” and Margaret Penton Lay.

He graduated from Milton High School in 1954, where he stood out as a star football player while his high school sweetheart Lois cheered him on from the sidelines. He and Lois married that same year, and he also joined the Air Force. After leaving the Air Force he began a 40 year career at what was then Cyanamid. He also had a career in real estate for over 30 years. Later, he co-owned a video store called Sound Garden for 10 years. He never really retired.

Bryant enjoyed golf, fishing, politics, and his Florida Gators. Most of all he loved the Lord and his family. He and Lois started the first bus ministry for Ferris Hill Baptist Church where they ministered to many.

He is preceded in death by his parents, JG and Margaret Lay; brother, Gordon Lay; and sister, Jeanette Blake.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lois Hudson Lay; his sons, Steve (Keitha) Lay and Greg (Theresa) Lay; grandchildren, Stephanie, Ryan, Sam and Johnathon Lay, Kaitlyn Cox and 1 great-grandson, Rowell Gilmer; brother, Frank (Nancy) Lay; sister-in-law, Judy Lay and brother-in-law, Jimmy Blake. Bryant also has many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends that will miss him.

A memorial is set for Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Trahan Family Funeral Home of Milton, 6539 Trammel Dr. Visitation is 12:00 PM with service to start at 1:00 PM.
