John L. Maciolek, 84, of Pensacola, FL, passed away at home on Monday, April 12, 2021, with his loving family by his side.
John was born on May 22, 1936, in the Thompsonville section of Enfield, where he also grew up. He graduated from Enfield High School, went to college at American International College and earned a degree in Business Administration. John would fondly share memories of his high school days playing football and continued to stay in touch with his classmates throughout the years.
His career in the lumber business started when he worked at Moore’s Lumber Company in South Windsor, where he became store manager. He won many sales awards throughout the years that afforded him to travel all around the world with his first wife, Jean Maciolek. He left Moore’s Lumber Company in the early 80’s when an opportunity arose to own and operate C.H. Moore Lumber and Oil Company in Stafford Springs, CT, with his brother, Francis Maciolek. He eventually moved on in the mid-90’s to finish his career in the retail lumber industry with Kelly Fradet until he retired.
John was a natural-born leader, serving as a scout master for Boy Scout Troop 888 for many years until his sons earned their Eagle Scout awards. He loved the great outdoors--hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, and hunting—and purchased land in Vermont, which became known as Camp Orangutang. He loved organizing annual hunting trips with “the boys”. John was well known for enjoying his Ballantine Ale or a glass of wine, Parodies, telling jokes and sharing stories.
In addition to his wife, Imelda Joyce Shirah Oliver Maciolek, John is survived by his two daughters and two sons, and their spouses, Monica and Gerry Williams of Pensacola, FL, Suzanne and Francis Pare of Columbia, CT, Michael Maciolek of Enfield, his former wife and close family friend, Ellie Puchkoris, and Rick and Nadine Maciolek of Union, CT. He will be sadly missed by his 10 grandchildren, Amber Majka, Jesse Maciolek, Jonathan and Staci Williams, Brandon and Danielle Maciolek, Tim and Ryan Edman, Christine Hagan and Tanya Irons, along with 12 great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Nellie Maciolek; his first wife, Jean Maciolek of 32 years; his second wife, Nicoletta Maciolek, and his brother, Francis Maciolek.
Services and burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory can be made to the Connecticut Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation, Post Office Box 815, Glastonbury, CT 06033-0815 or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
