1959-2023
Mark Conway Barnes, 64, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family in Milton, Florida on Tuesday, April 4th. Born April 1st, 1959, Mark was incredibly proud of his 13th Generation Milton heritage. He was the son of Dr. Claude James Barnes and Josefa Rodriguez Barnes (Fefi). Growing up in Milton, Mark had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed kayaking, fishing, and barefoot skiing on the Blackwater River with his family and friends.
Mark graduated from Milton High School in 1977. After graduating high school, Mark studied Biology and briefly attended seminary school at Springhill College in Mobile, Alabama. He went on to attend the University of Florida and earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering. After working in land surveying as a Civil Engineer, Mark felt a calling toward the field of teaching and earned his Education degree from the University of West Florida. He went on to teach mathematics at his beloved alma mater, Milton High School, for 28 years before retiring in 2016. One of his favorite sayings was “Once A Panther, Always A Panther.” He was a passionate, dedicated teacher and touched the lives of countless young adults during his career.
Mark had many hobbies and was a life-long learner. He spent countless hours in his garage working on various projects including wood working, wood burning, and rosary making. He enjoyed coming up with
ideas for gadgets to improve daily life in his home. He also enjoyed learning new recipes and being creative in the kitchen. Mark was also a talented vocalist and musician who maintained a beautiful collection of guitars and other instruments. As a devout Catholic, Mark attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where he also served as a music minister for many years.
During his life, Mark befriended countless individuals. He held a deep passion for helping others and made friends wherever he went. Mark never met a stranger, and his sense of humor could make even the toughest person laugh. He will be greatly missed by many. Mark was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Claude James Barnes, mother, Josefa Rodriguez Barnes, and brother, John Thomas Barnes.
Mark is survived by his wife, Becky Mauro-Barnes, siblings Dr. James A. Barnes (Rita), Gregory P. Barnes, and Madeleine Reese (Ted), children Matthew C. Barnes, PhD (Gabby), Nathan C. Barnes (Emelly), Vincent C. Mauro, and Lisa N. Mauro (Mallory), as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Saturday, April 29, 2023, at St Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 6451 Park Ave. of Milton. There will be a public visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. with funeral mass to follow at 11:00 a.m.
