Obituary for Mary Ann Elizabeth Maher

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mary Ann Elizabeth Maher of Pace, Florida, who went to be with the Lord on May 12, 2023 at the age of 71. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

Mary Ann was born at 11:24 pm in St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida on January 13, 1952. After growing up in the Jacksonville and St. Augustine, Florida area, the family moved to Tallahassee, Florida where she attended Cobb Jr. High and Leon High School from 1966 to 1970 where she excelled in theater and choir. It was in her 12th grade creative writing class that she met her future husband and what would become a 53-year love affair. On June 5, 1974 they were married in the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel. Four years later, Laura Susan was born in 1978 followed by Diana Elizabeth in 1980. She is remembered by friends and family for her deep involvement helping others. This selfless giving ranged from raising two wonderful daughters, to teaching pre-Kindergarten children, to helping junior officer wives understanding and coping with Navy deployments, to assisting Team Portsmouth Cycling in raising over $1 million to fight chronic diseases like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and cancer.

She was predeceased by: her parents, Marvin C. Norton and Eloise S. Norton (Ross). She is survived by: her husband John Maher of Pace, Florida, her daughters, Laura Susan Bird of Niceville, Florida and Diana Elizabeth Maher of Navarre, Florida; her son-in-law, Kris Bird, her grandsons Aidan Stuebing and Barrett Bird; her brother and sister-in-law Rick and Shirley Norton, brother and sister-in-law David and Colleen Norton and their son Trevor; her sister Judy Bisbee and niece Misty Moye and nephew Chris and wife Eileen Bisbee; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Steven and Janice Vores and their children Tiffany and Steven.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to made to her two favorite local charities - Inclusive Learning Center, 1622 25th ST. Niceville, 32578 or Ascension Sacred Heart Cancer Center. Flowers can be sent to 5265 Crystal Creek Dr., Pace, Florida, 32571.
Trahan’s Funeral Home, 60 Industrial Boulevard, Pensacola, Florida is handling arrangements (850-438-8218). A procession will be leaving on Friday, May 19, 2023 to NAS Pensacola at 12:30pm for a graveside service at 1 pm Barrancas National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Rd, Pensacola, FL 32508.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
