Obituary for Mary Lou Lamberti

Mary Lou Lamberti passed away on February 5, 2023, after a multi-year struggle with dementia. She was 91 years old. “The Lou” as she was known, was the proud mother of four and grandmother of five grandchildren. Mary Lou’s greatest love was her family. She also had a great love for the music of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, and her favorite, Johnny Mathis. She was known for her spirited personality, sharp wit, and a love for chocolate martinis. In her later years, she enjoyed ceramics, chocolate making and soaking up the Florida sunshine.

Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1931, her childhood coincided with The Great Depression. Her father spent many weeks away from home, earning a living driving trucks across the country to support his wife and five children. Things improved, and being a true city-girl, Mary Lou enjoyed many summer days at the beach and other attractions in Coney Island, including Nathan’s and Steeplechase Park.

After her wedding in 1949 to Alphonso Lamberti, she moved from Brooklyn to Miami Beach with her husband and a few of her in-laws. The family established and ran The Dolphin Motel on Harding Avenue. Mary Lou’s first son, Vincent, was born during this time in Florida.

Eventually, the family returned to Brooklyn. Family lore tells us it was because everyone missed Macy’s and A&S department stores.

Mary Lou had three more sons, all Brooklyn-born: Allan, Joseph and Robert.

At age 80, Mary Lou retired from Skadden, Arps law firm after a long career in its Trust and Estates Department. She was entrusted with the wills of many famous celebrities, politicians, and musicians. On one memorable morning commute in September of 2001, Mary Lou was aboard a Staten Island Ferry which was preparing to dock at the terminal in lower Manhattan just as the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center commenced above her. She was an eyewitness to the attack on both towers. The captain of the ferry backed out of the slip and brought his passenger to the safety of Staten Island.

Mary Lou was pre-deceased by her husband and is survived by her four children, and five grandchildren. They invite you to celebrate her life by sharing your favorite memories of The Lou. The family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. (Alz.org)
