Obituary for Melba June Hunter

Melba June Hunter
July 16, 1934 – April 3, 2022

Melba June Hunter went to be with The Lord on Sunday, April 3, 2022, in Pensacola, Florida at home surrounded by loved ones. She grew up in Cordova, Alabama and spent her childhood there with her parents, Floyd F. Fielding and Lessie E. Fielding and her siblings Noel (Charlotte) Fielding, Steve (Ella) Fielding, Jean (Howard) Estes, Spud Fielding, Joyce Fielding, and Shirley (James) Harbin.

She went on to graduate from Cordova High School in 1953. She married George E. Hunter on 1/1/1954 and supported him and their family while he was in the Air Force for 21 years. They had two children, George Edgar Hunter, Jr. and Cynthia Hunter Knowlton. They moved to Pensacola, Florida in 1972, when George retired and completed his service to our country. They were married for 65 years.

Melba had a career as a homemaker and retired from the accounting office at the Naval Exchange in Pensacola. She always put her family first and welcomed and loved all friends of her family as her own. Everyone called her “Grandma” and she was well known for making the ‘I Love You’ sign to all of her loved ones as they left her home. She had a smile that would light up a room!

Melba was preceded in death by her father, Floyd F. Fielding; her mother, Lessie E. Fielding; husband, George Edgar Hunter Sr.; her siblings, Joyce Fielding, Steve (Ella) Fielding, Thomas “Spud” Fielding, Noel “Spark” Fielding, Shirley (James) Harbin, and Jean (Howard) Estes; brother-in law, Claude (Kate) Taylor; sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Bobby) Holsombeck; nephews, Dewey Hunter Jr and Bobby Hill; and niece, Paulette Hill.

She is survived by her brother-in-law, Allen (Evelyn) Hunter; sisters-in-law, Christine Sanders and Charlotte Fielding; her children George Edgar (Judith) Hunter, Jr. and Cynthia Diane (Byron) Knowlton; and her grandchildren, Byron (Lindsey) Knowlton III, Jennifer (William) Callahan, Christina (Wesley) Sullivan, Jessie Hunter, and Emily Hunter; her great-grandchildren, Addison Callahan, Lillia Knowlton, Victoria Callahan, Gage Knowlton, Jillian Callahan, Ava Callahan, and Zachary Callahan; her nieces and nephews, Don (Cynthia) Fielding, Paula Estes McDavid, Joe (CiCi) Estes, Beth Harbin, Bruce (Lynda) Harbin, Wanda McClaren, Brenda Heigl, Jerry Fielding, Lynn Riley, Charlene Townsley, Mike Fielding, Terry (Diane) Sanders, Doug (Beckie) Sanders, Mike (Lydia) Sanders, Debbie Hill Girard, Buddy Taylor, Regina (Chip) Kemp, Donna (Bill Ed) Gilbert, Marty (John) Rogers, and Russell (Beth) Hunter.

Departure from Trahan Family Funeral Home, 60 Industrial Blvd, Pensacola, Florida on April 21, 2022 at 10:00 a.m., proceeding to Barrancas National Cemetery on Pensacola Naval Air Station with funeral service beginning at 10:30 a.m. Reverend Freddie Tellis will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) as Melba has been a lifetime donor and supporter.
