Obituary for Norman "Gene" Eugene Nichols

Norman Eugene “Gene” Nichols
December 10, 1946 – April 10, 2022

Norman Eugene “Gene” Nichols, age 75, passed away April 10th at his home in Navarre, FL. Gene was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to parents Norman Daniel Nichols and Gladys Joyce (Lewis) Nichols.

As an “Army brat,” Gene spent his childhood in places like Naples, Italy, where he was a member of Cub Scout Pack #193 in 1955. He graduated from Shawswick High School in Bedford, Indiana.

Gene was a veteran of both the US Army, 1966-1977, and the US Navy, 1982-1991 and retired as Petty Officer First Class. He was decorated with the US Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Battle “E” Ribbon, .45 Cal. Pistol Marksman, the Air Medal, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation and Expert Rifle medal. Gene moved to Navarre, FL following his retirement from Crane Army Ammunition Activity where he worked in security.

When Gene was not voraciously consuming crime novels and military action fiction, he enjoyed stalking the wild morel in the fickle Indiana springtime, fishing at Williams Dam, and dancing to Abba in the farmhouse kitchen in Bedford.

He is preceded in death by his father, Norman Daniel Nichols.

He is survived by his children Eric Nichols of Clinton, Utah and Nicole Nichols Shields of Nashville, Indiana; six grandchildren; his mother, Gladys Nichols of Navarre, Florida; sister, Cynthia Seaman of Independence, MO; and brother, Jeffrey Nichols of Montgomery, AL.

A graveside service will be held for family at Barrancas National Cemetery at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, do something great for someone that you love.
